GATESVILLE – Sparked by a first-place effort from freshman Emma Stegemoller, the Brownwood Lady Lions finished second in their draw at the Gatesville cross country meet over the weekend.
Due to UIL restrictions imposed because of COVID-19, no more than eight teams can run at a time during a cross country meet. On Saturday, Brownwood was in a group of three and tallied 39 points, which left the Lady Lions behind Grace Academy (35 points) and ahead of Priddy (48).
Stegemoller paced Brownwood with a top time of 13:36.8 followed by Naysa Leach (6th, 14:15.5), Ali Touhakis (10th, 15.08.9), Kinnison Harvey (15:14.4), Molly Oliver (14th, 15:55.4), Ava Brownlee (16th, 16:03.2), and Brileigh Price (17th, 16:03.3).
The Lions, meanwhile, competed in an eight-team draw and placed seventh with 123 points. Brownwood finished behind Gatesville (47 points), Stephenville (64), Waco University (95), Mexia (106), Burnet (118), and Lampasas (119). The Lions came in ahead of Live Oak Classical (205 points).
Competing for Brownwood were Caleb Nelson (8th, 18:21.7), Cameron Phipps (21st, 19:38.1), Eli Menchaca (33rd, 21:27.3), Andrew Boren (34th 21:28.3), Vincent Floyd (35th, 21:29.3), Aden Solis (41st, 22:01.7), Elijah King (45th, 22:25), Evan Fraze (47th, 23:03.5), Hunter Glass (48th, 23:26.4), and James Noland (52nd, 24:18.4).
The Lions and Lady Lions are slated to compete again Oct. 2 at the Lampasas Invitational.
