SAN ANGELO – The Brownwood High tennis team took to the road for the first time Tuesday and was unable to duplicate Saturday’s season-opening victory, falling instead by a 10-9 count to San Angelo Lake View.
“We’re obviously disappointed in the loss, however, it was a good learning lesson for some of these players who have never experienced the varsity level,” said Brownwood High tennis coach Crystal Blazek. “We were down 4-3 after doubles which had three matches that were close that we could have pulled off which would have put us in a better singles situation. It’s all about momentum after doubles.”
Brownwood picked up one victory each in mixed doubles, Nathan Ramos and Natalie Mares (8-3 over Cooper and Rangel); girls doubles, No. 3 Labritaney Pollard and Tatum Dehart (8-1 over Analezh Zammorah and Alyssa Lechuga); and boys doubles, No. 3 Dillon Gatlin and River Prado (8-6 over Chase Daniels and Luke Hartin).
In singles competition, victories for the Lions belonged to No. 2 Peter Le (8-3 over Ethan Benevidez), No. 5 Ramos (8-2 over Daniels), and No. 6 Gatlin (8-5 over Hartin).
Lady Lions claiming singles wins were No. 2 Aliyah Uvalle (8-2 over Hailey Torrez), No. 3 Victoria Ramos (8-6 over Madison Goetz), and No. 6 Dehart (8-0 over Zammorah).
The Lions and Lady Lions (1-1) will attempt to return to the win column Saturday as they host Wall at 9 a.m. and Snyder at 1:30 p.m.
“We’ll have two more tough opponents in Wall and Snyder this Saturday so we have to get back to battling,” Blazek said.
