BANGS – The Bangs Dragons dominated for the entirety of their scrimmages against Goldthwaite and Menard Thursday night, scoring on every offensive possession.
“It was exciting tonight to finally go against a different colored jersey,” said Bangs third-year head coach Kyle Maxfield. “Both Menard and Goldthwaite have good squads but our kids showed up hungry and that was exciting to see.”
The Dragons reached the end zone twice against Goldthwaite and once against Menard in controlled scrimmage action, then Bangs owned a 21-0 edge over Goldthwaite in a live quarter of play.
“We’ve been executing on offense in practice against the defense, but you don’t know what to expect against a different team or a different scheme,” Maxfield said. “We kept clicking on all cylinders tonight. We’ve got a lot weapons and if we continue to improve up front that’s going to help.”
Defensively, the Dragons yielded one touchdown to Goldthwaite during the controlled portion, but aside from that Bangs did not let its opponents cross midfield.
“We would liked to have that goose egg, but it was a really good night for defense, they really flew around,” Maxfield said. “We’re also in pretty good condition and that’s a credit to them working hard this summer. That’s going to be big especially early when we play teams that have a few more numbers.”
The Dragons featured a balanced offensive attack scoring wise as Ethan Sanchez recorded a pair of touchdowns on ground while Guy Powell, Damien Santillanes and Harley Keely also ran for touchdowns. Through the air, Brayton Wedeman and Trevor Bowers hauled in scoring receptions from quarterback Ethan Cortez.
On defense, Bowers recorded an interception.
The Dragons open the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 against visiting Early, whose scrimmage against Eastland was canceled Thursday night after a Longhorn student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19. The Bangs-Early game next week is scheduled to go on as originally planned.
