The May Tigers overcame a five-run deficit early on and escaped a one-run hole in the bottom of the sixth inning as a three-run, walk-off home run by Cooper Dail resulted in a 12-10 triumph over the Bangs Legends in Texas Teen-Age Baseball 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament action Tuesday night at the Early City Park.
With the win, the Tigers will tangle with the Early Red Sox at 6 p.m. Wednesday in another elimination game, while the Legends’ season reached its conclusion.
Trailing 10-9 in the bottom of the sixth, May’s Ryder Perry led off the frame with an infield single to third base, then Bently Berrera reached on a base hit to left field. With one out, Dail stepped to the plate and ripped a bullet into left field, allowing all three base runners to score and secure the victory.
Bangs snapped a 9-all tie in the top of the sixth as Layton Williams reached on a one-out infield single and later scored on a RBI triple by Kyson Meeks, who was then tagged rounding third base for the second out.
The Legends raced out to a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Slyder Estess tripled to start the game then scored on Jacob Edminsten’s RBI ground out. With two outs, Heath Milam and De’Shawn Orosco singled in front of an RBI infield base hit by Jerron Briscoe, a two-RBI double by Williams and an RBI single from John Holcomb.
In the bottom of the first, May was retired in order.
The Tigers finally lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning after holding Bangs scoreless in the top half.
A lead off double by Dail was followed by a two-run home run to left field by Chase Woods. With one down in the frame, Hoyden Seider reached on an infield single and later came home on Ben Rinella’s RBI base hit up the middle.
Bangs increased the lead to 6-3 in the top of the third as Orosco singled with two outs and scored on Briscoe’s RBI infield single.
May answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to take its first advantage, 7-6.
Perry began the inning with a double, Berrera followed with an RBI infield single and Branson Behler reached on an infield base hit ahead of Dail’s first three-run homer of the contest, which was aided by multiple errant throws.
The Legends reclaimed a 9-7 advantage in the top of the fourth as Williams singled to start the frame and scored on Holcomb’s RBI single. Then, with two outs, Estess’ two-run home run pushed Bangs back in front.
May scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 9.
With two outs, Perry singled to left field, Berrera followed with an RBI triple and Behler delivered an RBI single.
Neither team pushed across a run in the fifth inning.
Coleman Bluecats 13, Brownwood Tigers 11
The Brownwood Tigers spotted the Coleman Bluecats a 13-run advantage, yet sent the tying run to the plate in their final at-bat before the rally was quashed in a 13-11 loss.
The Tigers’ defeat came on the heels of a 21-3 loss at the hands of Buffalo Payne earlier Tuesday, thus ending Brownwood’s season.
Coleman, which earlier in the day ousted the Brownwood Blue Jays from the tournament by a 17-2 count, will clash with the winner of the Early-May game at 8 p.m. Wednesday as they continue to fight through the elimination bracket.
The Bluecats opened a 13-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings before the Tigers’ bats finally came to life.
Brownwood generated the maximum seven runs in the bottom of the third.
Ryder Lucas’ RBI single drove in Dion DeShields with the Tigers’ first run, and an onslaught followed. Fritz Stegemoller then responded with a two-RBI triple to left field that plated Lucas and Jeremiah Deal. Jakaiden DeShields’ RBI infield single knocked in Stegemoller to make the score 13-4. Jack Bauchman then launched a three-run home run to left field to score himself, Jakaiden DeShields and Kolby Mitchell, who singled earlier, for the max seven runs in a frame.
Coleman went scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, which set the stage for Brownwood. SWith the time limit expiring during the frame, the Tigers needed the maximum seven runs to complete an improbable comeback.
Cutler Clark started the frame with a solo home run to left field. Then, with two outs, Dion DeShields and Jeremiah Deal reached base ahead of an RBI infield single by Lucas and some off-target throws, which allowed Brownwood to creep within 13-10.
Stegemoller followed with an RBI infield single to trim the deficit to 13-11 and stood at second base with the tying run at the plate. But the last at-bat was a low line drive snagged by the Coleman third baseman, as the Bluecats advanced to day three.
Comanche Pirates 14, Early Red Sox 2
The host Early Red Sox were dealt their first defeat in the double elimination event as the Comanche Pirates rode stellar defensive play to a 14-2 victory Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Red Sox will meet the May Tigers at 6 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination bracket contest.
Meanwhile, the Comanche Pirates advance to face Buffalo Payne at 8 p.m. Wednesday with the winner moving on to Thursday’s state championship game.
Early scored single runs in the second and fourth innings.
The first run for the Red Sox was the result of a lead off infield single by Braxden Moya and a one-out RBI single by Cash Clark. The second run featured a two-out RBI single by Kannon Matthews, which knocked in Braxton Musick, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Comanche got all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first inning, tallying the maximum seven.
Brody Gore ripped a three-run home run, Kamden Grissom belted a two-run blast and Trey Morin recorded a home run as well.
The Pirates tacked on three more runs in the second inning and their final four in the fourth.
