The Early Red Sox surrendered runs in just two innings, while generating the first 10 runs of the contest en route to a 16-5 triumph over the Brownwood Blue Jays to open Texas Teen-Age Baseball 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament action at the Early City Park Monday night.
The Red Sox offense was sparked by Braxden Moya’s four-hit, three-RBI effort; Hagan Rasberry’s four hits and two RBI; Brayden Ivey and Logan Ingram with three hits and two RBI apiece; Braxton Musick with a pair of hits and two driven in; Kannon Matthew with a hit that knocked in two; Cash Clark with one hit and an RBI; and Ethan Collison plated a runner with an RBI fielder’s choice.
For the Blue Jays, Zaidyn Green notched three hits; Shooter Gibbs and Colt Longabaugh both finished with two hits and a pair of RBI; Christopher Nix contributed two hits; and Braxton Merket, Sam Windham, Carter Spruill and Preston Habekott added one hit apiece.
After a scoreless first inning, the Red Sox lit up the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the second. A triple by Rasberry was followed by an RBI single from Moya and two-run home run by Matthews.
Brownwood again failed to score in the bottom of the second inning, which permitted Early to seize control, 10-0, in the top of the third thanks to the maximum seven runs to score in a frame.
Ivey doubled, Ingram and Rasberry followed with singles, Moya doubled, Clark tallied an infield single, Ivey added his second hit of the inning and Ingram closed the frame with an RBI base hit.
The Blue Jays reduced the deficit to 10-3 in the bottom of the third as Habekott singled, Nix reached on a base hit, Gibbs drove in two with a base hit and Longabaugh tacked on an RBI single.
Early regained a double-digit advantage, 13-3, in the top of the fourth as Rasberry led off with a hit, Moya singled him home, then Musick and Clark chipped in consecutive two-out RBI singles.
Brownwood again went quietly in the fourth, which allowed Early to stretch the lead to 16-3 in the top of the fifth. Ivey led off with a double followed by back-to-back triples from Ingram and Rasberry. Moya drove in the final run on an infield single.
Needing at least six runs to keep the game alive, as no team can record more than seven in an inning, Brownwood was limited to a pair in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest.
Nix and Gibbs both singled while Longabaugh and Green collected RBI base hits.
