After spotting the Bangs Legends the initial three runs in their Texas Teen-Age Baseball 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament opener Monday night at Early City Park, the Brownwood Tigers roared back with a dozen consecutive runs on the way to a 21-5 victory.
The Tigers notched 21 of the final 23 runs, giving up just two more to the Legends in the top of the third inning.
Pacing the offensive performance for the Tigers were Kolby Mitchell with four hits and five RBI; John Bauchman with four hits and four RBI; Ryder Lucas and Jakaiden DeShields with four hits and three RBI apiece; Fritz Stegemoller and Dion DeShields both with three hits and a pair of RBI; Jeremiah Deal with two of hits; and Cutter Clark with two hits and three RBI.
The Legends received two hits and three RBI from Spur Davis; two hits with two runs driven in by Layton Williams; a pair of hits from both Slyder Estess and Da’Shawn Orosco; and one hit from Heath Milam.
Bangs’ three-run top of the first inning featured a double by Estess, two-run homer from Davis, a single by Milam and a two-out RBI double by Williams.
Brownwood doubled up Bangs with six runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Deal, Lucas and Stegemoller all singled followed by a double from Mitchell, back-to-back RBI bloop singles by Bauchman and Jakaiden DeShields, and a two-run triple by Clark.
A silent top of the second inning for Bangs was followed by another six-spot from Brownwood, which opened a 12-3 advantage.
Dion DeShields doubled, Deal singled, Lucas drove in two with a triple, Stegemoller followed with an RBI single, Mitchell belted a two-run home run, Jakaiden DeShields doubled, Bauchman and Clark recorded two straight infield singles and Dion DeShields later added an RBI infield hit.
The Legends closed the gap to 12-5 with their final two runs in the third as Davis led off with another homer, Orosco later doubled and Williams delivered a two-out RBI single.
The Tigers reeled off the game’s last nine runs – four in the third inning and five more in the fourth.
Mitchell, Bauchman, Clark and Jakaiden DeShields picked up RBI in the third, while Mitchell and Bauchman recorded two-RBI base hits in the fifth, while Jakaiden DeShields also plated a base runner.
In other TTAB State Tournament action Monday night:
* Behind three home runs from Case Markham, the Brownwood Brewers kicked off play in the 14U tournament at Rusk with a 14-8 victory over Buffalo Brooks. The Brewers were forced to play a second game Monday and fell by a 17-5 count to the Van Black Jacks, which drew a first-round bye. With the loss, the Brewers will attempt to stave off elimination at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the Rusk Rangers.
* In 14U state action at Rusk, the May Tigers were on the short end of a 27-9 decision against the Rusk Eagles. May will be back in action at 8 pm. Tuesday in the elimination bracket.
* The Brownwood Pirates dropped their opener to the Belton Cardinals, 10-4, in 12U Open Base action in Franklin. The Pirates will play an elimination game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
* The May Tigers fell by a 13-0 count to the Belton Dodgers in the 12U Open Base tournament in Franklin. The Tigers are also in the elimination bracket where they will clash with either the Grand Saline Orioles or Rogers Ballers at 5 p.m. Thursday.
* The Bangs Legends, playing in the 10U Tight Base State Tournament in Chandler, were dealt an 18-2 defeat by Buffalo McVeay. The Legends, who trailed just 3-2 until the bottom of the third, face an elimination game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against either the Grand Saline Cubs or Chandler Dodgers.
