The Brownwood Lions have reshuffled their football schedule, but not like head coach Sammy Burnett originally anticipated.
When the UIL announced its change of plans for fall sports Tuesday morning, it was first thought Brownwood’s regular season schedule would remain intact. Then, it was learned that Class 5A and 6A teams, who do not start their seasons until Sept. 24, would play all 10 regular season games. At that point, it appeared Abilene Wylie would be taken off Brownwood’s schedule.
Fast forward a few hours later, and the Lions will now serve as Wylie’s Week 1 opponent while Brownwood keeps its Sept. 25 homecoming date against the Bulldogs in the pre-district finale. Wylie was forced to revamp its schedule as well, and opted to keep its date with the Lions.
However, there is still a major change to Brownwood’s slate.
The original Week 3 foe – China Spring – was slated to visit Gordon Wood Stadium on Sept. 11. McLennan County on Tuesday announced its schools will not start until Sept. 7, forcing the Cougars to alter their schedule as the Lions were removed.
Now the team visiting Brownwood on Sept. 11 will be the Springtown Porcupines, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A Division I by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, coming off a 13-2 season and trip to the state semifinals.
As preseason practices loom on Aug. 3, the 15th-ranked Lions will now face five teams ranked in the Top 12 of Class 4A Division I by DCTF – No. 1 Waco La Vega, No. 3 Lampasas, No. 6 Springtown, No. 11 Stephenville, and No. 12 Midlothian Heritage – along with 4A Division II No. 11 Midland Greenwood.
The new Lions’ schedule is as follows:
