Brownwood News – According to Vitalant, community blood service provider, the blood supply is critically LOW right now. As more elective surgeries are performed, the need for blood has skyrocketed while donations have dropped.
Beginning June 1, Vitalant started testing all completed blood donations for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. “We’re doing this as a special service for our donors. Approximately 2 weeks after they donate, donors can view their antibody results in their online donor account.”

Typical summer blood inventory challenges are being compounded by communities beginning to reopen while some blood drive hosts remain shuttered. Requirements for social distancing have also created additional challenges on our mobile blood drives and in our brick-and-mortar donation centers. Additionally, curfews and active demonstrations in some of our communities have necessitated certain Vitalant donation centers shorten operating hours, further impacting our ability to collect blood.
