Brownwood News – UPDATE – The shooting victim has been identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Jay Jones of Brownwood.

Previous Story

On Thursday night, December 5, at approximately 10:45 pm, Early Police Officers along with other law enforcement officers from Brownwood PD and Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Early Fire and Lifeguard EMS responded to the 100 block of northwest Liveoak to what was reported to be a male subject shot in the chest laying in the road.

Officers arrived on scene and found a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the chest lying in the road. Officers provided first aid until Fire and EMS arrived. The victim was then air lifted from the scene by Air Evac to a Ft Worth Hospital.

According to an Early Police Department report, the investigation led officers to a residence in the 600 block of Lucus Drive where the shooting occurred.  Inside a bedroom of the residence officers found a bloody scene along with drug paraphernalia and a small amount of methamphetamines. Once officers questioned several individuals it was learned that the victim and 4 others were in the bedroom when one subject, playing with a gun, pointed it at the others. The male subject then fired a shot in the room striking the victim in the chest with the .40 caliber handgun. The individuals in the room fled the scene, along with the victim, who stumbled out of the house and into the roadway where he collapsed, the police report states. The individual who fired the weapon remained with the victim until law enforcement arrived where he eventually confessed to accidentally shooting the victim. The 17 year-old victim, of Brownwood, is being treated for his wounds.  His condition as of late Friday morning was unknown. Officers are still attempting to locate several individuals from the scene for questioning.

No charges have been filed at this time but the investigation is on-going, according to Early Police Chief David Mercer.
