Written by Ben Cox – Brownwood Lion football players are in the thick of it now: two-a-days have begun. The first season under head coach Sammy Burnett is weeks away with a nationally televised home opener at the end of the month.

Burnett says that while it does get discussed in the locker room and during coaches meetings, the televised game doesn’t get discussed during practice. “We gotta go out and win every day. We can’t worry about August 31st, we gotta worry about August 7th and take care of business and win today. We’ll worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Hopefully by the time August 31st gets here we’ll be in a position to go out there ands play confident and be successful.
Burnett continues “It’s exciting for our kids and our town. In the new era that we’re starting to get to start out on Fox. I think it’s an honor to be selected as one of the two games in the state of Texas that are played on live tv this year. That just goes back to the big tradition that we have here in Brownwood. It’s a great tribute to our program, where we’ve been and were we’re going.”
Conditioning is the word of the hour during Burnett’s two-a-day practices. “I tell the kids ‘The legs feed the wolf’. Without the legs, the wolf won’t eat. We gotta be in shape so we don’t worry about cardiovascular in the fourth quarter. So as the game goes on we get stronger because we’re in shape, we have good cardiovascular, and our mind is clear so we’re able to play faster and harder than the opponent because we’re not worrying about getting air.”
Burnett likes what he sees from this years team so far. “Yesterday was a great starting point for us. The kids have a great attitude and they’re working hard. They’re being sponges, they’re soaking up everything we’re giving them. The quicker we can get in shape and the quicker they can worry about learning instead of breathing the better we’ll be, but that’ll come in time.”
