Brownwood News – For over 20 years, the Brownwood Public Library has held their Summer Reading Club to encourage children to continue to read, explore, and learn during their break from school. This year’s program kicked off on May 29th (plenty of time to still join in the fun) and is now in full swing with a variety of special presentations scheduled for local children to enjoy.

Last year 327 children participated in the program, and this year is looking to attract an even larger group with the following scheduled programs:
- San Angelo Symphony harpist – June 7
- Abilene Zoo – June 14
- Dinosaur Valley- June 22
- Amazing Science- June 28
- Life of a Therapy Dog – July 5
- Smokey the Bear- July 12
- Finale Party, Tales and Tunes- July 19
All presentations will be held next door to the library at the Adams Street Community Center. For babies through children entering kindergarten, programs will be at 10 a.m. There will be a second presentation at 11 a.m. for children entering the first grade and up. The Finale Party on July 19th will be for all ages and will be held at 10 a.m. with a musical performer bringing some stringed instruments with her.
The programs won’t necessarily be entirely book-based, and will have plenty of hands-on opportunities to engage children. The Abilene Zoo will be bringing a few animals for the children to meet, Dinosaur Valley will give some information about fossils and then provide a chance for children to dig for their own fossils. A teacher from Zephyr will be doing the Amazing Science presentation, last year’s most popular presentation.
The reading log started on May 29th and continues until July 22nd. There will be drawings for prizes such as coupons to local restaurants at the weekly programs. An online reading log is also available to help young readers keep track. A new “read and bead” program is also available and allows children to track their time spent reading as they create a necklace or key chain showcasing their progress.
Interested participants can sign up by coming to the library and visiting the children’s desk.
