As students entered the cafeteria they were greeted with Mariachi music, and over the course of the day visited three main stations. In “El Restaurante” students sampled street tacos, burritos, and arroz y frijoles with a horchata drink. While they waited for their food to be served they enjoyed chips, salsa and queso.
In the “Mercado” students were able to see artifacts and cultural items utilized in Mexico. They also learned the meaning of Cinco de Mayo through the reading of “BRAVO! Poems about Amazing Hispanics,” which is also a 2018-2019 Bluebonnet Book Nominee. At this station students also created their own piñatas with a piece of Mexican candy inside.
In the “Salon de Baile” students tied in Mariachi music to what they learned during their study of musical theater and opera in April. Students listened to songs and had the opportunity to learn some dances as well.
“The event was funded by local businesses and parent volunteers,” said Nereida Ceniceros, Woodland Heights Elementary teacher and coordinator for the event. “I want to personally thank our parents and guardians at Woodland Heights for their generosity and time.”
The following establishments made donations in support of this event: Los Cazadores, Taco Casa, Taco Bell, Taco Bueno, Taquito Millonario, United, Brookshire’s, Monica Villareal and Jesse Cadena (former owners of Omar’s Taco Truck) and Rick Miller’s Life Skills class for shredding paper for the paper piñatas.
