Written by Rowonna McNeely – Sometimes, every now and then, I forget to tell Aaron what my plans are. It’s not often that it happens but it does happen. Shhh… don’t listen to what Aaron says. He might try to tell you it is more often than that… and really. Who are you going to believe? You know what… we should just move one.

Anyway, Kiera has picked up that trait. Sometimes, she has an elaborate plan and we have no idea that she was planning it.
Take Saturday for instance. Aaron got up Saturday morning when Kiera woke up. They let me sleep in. It was great.
I vaguely remember Aaron coming in the bedroom and asking if I had an alarm set. “No.” I answered squinting my eyes trying to bring him into focus.
“It’s 8 o’clock. What time do you need to get up to get ready?” He asked.
“9.” I managed to mumble before my eyes slid closed and I drifted back off into dreamland.
The next thing I knew I was being patted on the back. “Mom. Mom.”Kiera said. “It’s time to wake up.”
I blinked my eyes until they were able to open.
“Mom.” Kiera said again.
I turned my head to look at her and watched as she pulled the string on the ceiling fan to turn on the light. By the time my sleep-addled brain figured out what she was doing, it was too late to cover my eyes and the bright light momentarily blinded me.
She walked back over to me and proceeded to pat my shoulder again. “Don’t get up, Mom. Dad and I are making you a surprise breakfast and we will bring it to you.”
With one final pat, she walked out of the bedroom. I wasn’t really sure what to do. I already felt slightly guilty for not getting up earlier and I didn’t want Aaron to be cooking breakfast all by himself.
Grabbing my phone off the nightstand, I quickly shot off a text asking Aaron if he needed me to come into the kitchen.
I was just thinking about going to the kitchen when Kiera walked back into the bedroom.
“Sit up, Mom. I am bringing our surprise.” She said smiling at me.
Quickly I sat up and pushed a pillow behind my back. I watched as she carried a tray in and sat it in front of me.
“Oh…wow… honey. This is nice!” I exclaimed as I looked at the plate.
The main course was cubed pork loin and diced pepperoni topped with shredded cheese and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese… all mixed together. Placed neatly in a row beside the main course was a row of pickles.
I managed to stop gawking at breakfast and noticed there was also an empty ring box, piece of paper and a pencil placed beside the plate.
“I put the box to make the tray look special and this paper is so we can write how much we want to pay for this dish.” She explained as she climbed on the bed and sat directly across from me.
She grinned a gap-toothed grin before swiping a pickle off the plate and popping it in her mouth.
“Well… this is special!” I exclaimed after getting over the shock of my special breakfast dish. I picked up a cube of pork loin and slipped it into my mouth.
“Delicious!” I exclaimed as I chewed the slightly cool meat.
We smiled at each other before we began to grade the food and decide what we would pay for the meal.
“What are y’all doing?” Aaron said from the bedroom door. “Breakfast is ready!”
I glanced to the plate in front of me and back to Aaron.
He looked at me like I was crazy. “What have y’all been doing? Kiera said she was going to wake you up and that’s the last I heard.”
“Umm… I texted you! Kiera told me y’all were making a special breakfast!” I quickly replied.
We both looked to Kiera.
“I thought it would be nice to wake Mommy up with breakfast.” She explained.
Knowing that’s not really something you can argue with Aaron replied, “Come on. Breakfast is getting cold. “
Kiera and I slid off the bed to follow Aaron. She winked at me and said, “We can finish this later.”
You have got to love a little planner.
