The classes will run for ten (10) Tuesday nights from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and one Saturday class. The Saturday class is about three or four hours and is conducted at the shooting range. Participants often find range day to be the most exciting.
“We have a Citizen’s Police Academy for many reasons,” says Brownwood Police Chief Terry Nichols. “One of the primary reasons is transparency. We want you to know how your police department is run and how your tax dollars are spent. We open up our doors to the students and there are no unanswered questions; no secrets.”
Program participants will also have opportunities to ride on patrol with local police officers to see first-hand what the officers experience on a regular duty shift in Brownwood.
“Students will probably see Brownwood as they have never seen it before,” the chief said.
A tentative schedule for the 2018 class has been posted on the department’s website. This year, the class will be held at the Brownwood Fire Department Main Station, as the Law Enforcement Center Training Room is being used each evening for a Regional Police Academy.
During the course, participants will be educated about Patrol and Traffic Enforcement, Criminal Investigations and Narcotics, Communications/911, Training and Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events, DWI and Accident Investigations, and several other law enforcement related topics.
“We encourage all of our residents to consider attending the Citizen’s Police Academy. We promise it will be an experience you will remember and appreciate for a long time,” said Chief Nichols.
There is no cost to attend the course. Interested citizens can fill out an application, which can be turned in at the Brownwood Police Department: 1050 West Commerce or by contacting Lieutenant Troy Carroll at (325) 646-2525 for more information.
