Hubert Grady Swann, Jr. passed gently from this life on Friday, August 18th, ending an amazing journey of faith and resilience. Those that knew Hubert were aware of how courageously he fought to live and serve others at every opportunity, in spite of sometimes overwhelming health challenges. Hubert fiercely loved God, his family and his many friends.
Hubert was born on December 27, 1953 in Atlanta, Georgia to Hubert Grady Swann, Sr. and Florence Gunter Swann. His time in Atlanta was brief as his father was in the Air Force which made Hubert a citizen of many places including: Morocco, North Africa; Biloxi, Mississippi; Watertown, New York; and, finally, Abilene, Texas. Once settled in Abilene, he went to work at A&W Root Beer where he met his future wife and best friend. Hubert and Christy were married on August 12, 1972 and spent the next 45 years by one another’s side through countless adventures including those spent in Scouting with their youngest son, Zachary.
Hubert spent over 30 years working at 3M where he made lifetime friends. He was a member of Austin Avenue Church of Christ where he served in the Jail Ministry and Missions Committee.
Those left to carry on his legacy are his loving wife, Christy; mother, Florence Swann; daughter and son-in-law, Karina and Rob Daniel; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Melissa Swann; brother and sister-in-law, John and Martina Swann; Christy’s siblings – June Black, Roy Black and Clayton Black and wife, Susie; his grandchildren who called him “Papa” – Simone Morris and husband, Cade; Jackson Daniel; Anna Jane Daniel; Nadia Alvarado; and his great grandson, Elliot Morris. He also leaves behind his “girls” – Red and Sissy (his dogs), a host of extended family and friends across Texas and beyond including his special camping helper, Justin Chesser.
Those who welcomed him in Heaven were his father, Hubert, Sr.; his sister, Anna; his son, Zachary and many more loved ones.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 20th, from 5:30 to 7:30 at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. A private graveside service will be held on Monday at Greenleaf Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Austin Avenue Church of Christ Missions, West Texas Rehabilitation Center or a charity that will serve others.
