A memorial service for Marta “Kelly” Cole will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 3, 2017 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with David Williams officiating.
Marta Gayle Cole was born on November 30, 1945, to parents, JW and Helen Powell Beck in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. She died on Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Brownwood hospital, surrounded by her family members and friends.
She was raised and attended public schools in Sherman. After her marriage to Richard Roe, she was blessed with the birth of three children, but the first born, Tammy, died at the age of five.
Marta was a kind and generous woman who gave of her many talents and skills. She lived in Amarillo, Houston, McKinney and San Angelo, where she used her creative talent to own and operate several businesses. Her decorator and artistic talent enabled her to complete a move and “stage” service for clients in the Amarillo area as well as other locations in Texas. Through the years, her versatility resulted in work as a used furniture store owner and manager, as well as a mystery shopper in Illinois and Kentucky. She later entered the field of healthcare as a home health worker in West Texas. She went on to work at Shannon Memorial Hospital in San Angelo for fourteen years, where she finished her career as a telemetry specialist.
She chose to retire to Brownwood, where she became best buddies with her neighbor, Neva Van Story. Together they paired up to participate in ten sessions, of six different games, each week, plus occasional additional sessions, and were active at the local Senior Citizens Center. As a game whiz, Marta learned and later taught others to play the complex game of Mahjong. She henceforth kept her game set in the care “just in case.”
Marta was preceded in death by her young daughter Tammy and her parents, J W and Helen Johnson.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin Roe and wife Brenda of San Angelo and Scott Roe of Dallas; a brother, Ronald Beck and wife Carol of Comanche; two sisters, Megon Trent of Bentonville, Arkansas and Jama Sommers and husband Charles of Springdale, Arkansas; grandson, Ryan Roe of San Angelo, granddaughter, Kimberly Roe Velasquez of San Angelo, granddaughter, Leslie O’Hara of Austin; great-grandchildren, Ryland and Audrey Velasquez and Kaison and Jordan O’Hara; nephews, Brandon Fletcher and Mitchell Flanders; a niece, Jamie Fletcher-Yazetti and many friends.
As a very reserved and gracious woman, Marta Cole was a dear friend and family member. To her brother Ron, she was always “Baby Sister” because it was a decade before there were any others. She was loved and appreciated by all. She made friends easily and her many acquaintances will miss her sincerity and easy smile. She will be sorely missed. God Bless Marta!
