Written by Misty Bowers – Do you find yourself with a house full of kids and time on your hands this summer? Would you love an opportunity to volunteer alongside your children for a few meaningful hours this summer? Or maybe your watching the grandkids and need to get out of the house? Perhaps you already volunteer. What a great way to show a younger generation how much fun it is to volunteer. All you have to do is answer the SOS.

Good Samaritan Ministries would like to introduce the Summer of Service (SOS) held every third Saturday throughout the summer. On these Saturdays, GSM will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will have service projects available for the whole family.
“We are excited to announce the Summer of Service as an opportunity for families to work together on a mission for their friends and neighbors in Brown County,” said Phil Miller, Volunteer Coordinator of GSM. “This is also a great time for students 16 and older to get in some service hours for Key Club, Honor Society or other service organizations.”
Miller said they will schedule groups or families for one-hour time spots between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every third Saturday. But for the first SOS Saturday on June 17, they are encouraging fathers to volunteer with their children in anticipation of Father’s Day.
“It’s really such an incredible opportunity for fathers in the area to serve by example and have a meaningful time of service with their children,” Miller said. “We are calling this month’s SOS Dads and Lads and we are planning lots of volunteer options that will appeal to men and children of all ages.”
Miller said groups may be checking electronics, stocking the pantry, building shelves, packing food boxes or bags or any number of other projects.
Anyone interested in volunteering Saturday, June 17 should call Phil Miller, at 643-2273 to schedule a one-hour time spot.
