On Saturday, May 20th, at approximately 5:40 p.m., a 4-vehicle accident occurred in the 100 block of Early Boulevard at the CC Woodson intersection. One driver was transported to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center emergency room, and another driver was air-lifted to Hendricks in Abilene. Two additional vehicles’ occupants were not injured.
The driver of the second vehicle was longtime Early resident David Gray, former Early City Councilman and Barber/business owner. Gray was flown to Hendricks in Abilene; his current condition is unknown.
Early Police Officers applied for a search warrant to obtain a blood sample from one driver for a Driving While Intoxicated investigation. Traffic was diverted off Early Boulevard’s east-bound lane through the Tractor Supply parking lot to CC Woodson. A portion of CC Woodson near the intersection was also closed in order to facilitate a landing for a medical helicopter.
Early Police and Fire Departments, Brownwood Police Department, Brown County Sheriff Department, Lifeguard EMS and Air Evac responded to the accident.
The driver of the vehicle causing the accident was identified as Matthew Paul Gipson who was later arrested after being released from the emergency room.
Gipson was charged with Intoxication Assault With a Vehicle. Gipson was released from the Brown County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
According to jail records, Matthew Paul Gipson had previously been arrested for Driving While Intoxicated in December 2016.
