Press Release – Cross Classical Academy students enrolled in chess during the 2016-2017 school year recently competed in a school hosted chess tournament.  Grades 3 through 8 competed against one another for the tournament title.  The four-round tournament was a conclusion to their yearlong study of chess and chess club participation.

Chess teacher Linda House explained what her desire for students was to learn, “Playing chess teaches students how to handle competition while at the same time having fun. They learn sportsmanship and how to encourage or give pointers to other students who need extra help. The purpose of the tournament is to give them an opportunity to use what they have learned throughout the year. I have the competitors shake hands afterwards, say good game and hope that it is building a character trait they carry throughout their lives.”

The top four competitors were recognized for their accomplishments. Sofia Butka of Brownwood took first place in the tournament.  Second place was earned by Tyler Mitchell of Brownwood, Harrison Davis of Comanche earned the third place title and Hannah Davis of Comanche placed fourth.

“We are extremely proud of all the kids who participated in the tournament, they all proved to be tough competitors,” said House.
