Written by Amanda Coers – Hazle Wall has seen quite a few Valetine’s Day in her life: 100 to be exact. Though she likely has more than a few favorite Valentine’s Day memories, yesterday was undoubtedly a highlight as she was crowned Queen during a special Valentine’s Day celebration at Oakridge Manor in Brownwood.

Residents, staff, nurses, and family members vote for the winners of the Valentine’s Court at Oakridge. Residents with the most votes are crowned Prince, Princess, King, and Queen each year. The winners are announced during a party held in the dining area. Attendees this year enjoyed ice cream sundaes, cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, and pink lemonade.
The winner announcements began with this year’s Valentine’s Prince, 80 year old Pete Mauldin, Oakridge Manor’s Resident Council President.
“He’s the one who greets you at the door, pat you on the back, and offers you a cookie when you need one,” said Activities Director Butch Perkins. Mauldin was pinned with a corsage and photographed for the occasion.
Next to be announced was the Valentine’s Princess, 81 year old Wilma Penn. Her family was present during the celebration, and cheers of “way to go, grandma!” rang out from their table.
Crowned the King of Valentine’s Day was 95 year old Joe Bob Browning. “He’s always out and about, and he likes a cup of coffee and a good cookie,” said Perkins as she pinned his corsage.
Finally, the Queen was announced: 100 year old Hazel Wall. As her name was called, she exclaimed, “No! I can’t believe it!” touching her cheek as her sons cheered. “Well how about that, good!” Hazel said.
