Written by Amanda Coers – The Brown County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Brownwood Police Department, and members of the community gathered for a retirement celebration in honor of George Caldwell on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

After the death of longtime Brown County Sheriff Bobby Grubbs, it was Caldwell who served a little over a year as sheriff while the county held an election for a new sheriff. Vance Hill was elected sheriff last month, and Caldwell remained with the department, serving as Chief Deputy.

During the retirement celebration, Sheriff Vance Hill presented Caldwell with a plaque, a custom knife, and a “Challenge Coin.” These coins, common among military and law enforcement, are presented as tokens of appreciation for a job well done.

“We give them to employees who go above and beyond the call of duty, and sheriff, you’ve done that,” said Brown County Sheriff Vance Hill as he presented Caldwell with the challenge coin.

Caldwell was visibly moved, with a few tears in his eyes as he thanked the department.

“I’d just like to say it’s been an honor,” said Caldwell. “I do appreciate everybody’s help.”

Caldwell will continue to serve as a reserve deputy through his retirement, assisting with training for the sheriff’s department.

Brownwood Police Chief Terry Nichols also presented Caldwell with a challenge coin from the police department. In July, the newly appointed chief asked Caldwell to lead him thorough the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor, in a show of solidarity between the two agencies.

At Wednesday’s reception, Caldwell’s wife, Jessica, was present, as well as their son-in-law and daughter, Steven and Lisa Mapel and 3-year-old grandson, Jamison.

Speaking later during the ceremony, Jessica was surprised and touched.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen my husband teary-eyed in 50 years,” said Jessica. “He’s really going to miss them.”
