Big Country Ford and Lincoln Motor Company recently made donations to support those in need in Brown County.
BCF Salesman Kurt Newton explained that Lincoln Motor Company gave funds to help do something special in the communities of their dealerships and that Big Country Ford added to that making the donations even more significant. Both Newton and salesman Buddy Reynolds came up with two deserving projects.
Donations of approximately 100 pairs of socks and 100 pairs of gloves were given to help keep students at Northwest Elementary warm this winter. Northwest Elementary Principal Chris Young and 1st Grade teacher Jennifer Mares accepted the donations Monday at the dealership. They are pictured above with Salesman Buddy Reynolds who nominated Northwest Elementary as a recipient.
A donation of cash and a gift card were given to Good Samaritan Ministries to help with the Deer Project, a ministry that takes in donated deer to process benefitting the local food pantry. The donation funds the processing of four deer, each of which will provide 100 servings of protein for local families at risk of hunger. Kurt Newton is pictured below with Good Samaritan Ministries Executive Director Angelia Bostick and Deer Project committee member Curtis Shults.
Local deer processors Perk’s Processing in Brownwood, Lone Star Taxidermy and Processing in Owens, M&M Processing in Zephyr and Santa Anna Custom Processing support the project by offering their services at a discount rate. Local hunters have really stepped up this year to support this project, according to Shults and Bostick, who stated approximately 10,500 pounds of venison has been donated, nearing GSM’s 12,000 pound goal for this year.
The Deer Project allows hunters to use up the rest of their tags after they’ve filled their freezer or mounted that prize buck on their wall. They simply take their legally harvested and tagged deer to one of our participating processors.
At a greatly reduced rate of $1.25 per pound, the processors will then grind the meat into two-pound chub packs ready to be picked up and put in the freezers of GSM. It costs the hunters nothing but the time it takes to deliver the deer to the processor and tell them they want to donate to The Deer Project.
Donors make it possible to process the venison. GSM is seeking additional funds and deer donations to reach their goal for this year and ask the public to consider a donation to the Deer Project.
