Followers of musicals offered in recent years by the Lyric Performing Arts Company will recognize some familiar faces in lead roles as the musical comedy “Anything Goes” opens Thursday for a 10-show run.
However, those familiar faces will now be performing on a different stage: the 100-year-old venue of the just restored Lyric Theatre in downtown Brownwood. Following last week’s two performances of Handel’s “Messiah,” the musical is the first major theatrical event LPAC is offering at the “new” facility celebrating its centennial this year.
“ ‘Anything Goes’ is a toe-tapping delight of a musical with songs by Cole Porter that will have you whistling as you leave the theater,” said Dr. Nancy Jo Humfeld, LPAC artistic director and head of the Department of Theatre at Howard Payne University. “The talent on the Lyric stage is amazing. Most of the primary characters have been leads in other shows, and I know you will enjoy their return.”
Humfeld also said many of the cast members in this show are new to the Lyric stage, and she hopes that they will want to make participation a regular event.
“ ‘Anything Goes’ takes the audience on a wonderful, lyrical journey that will hopefully bring the desire for a return trip,” Humfeld added.
Opening night on Thursday will be preceded by a grand reopening gala beginning at 5:45 p.m. LPAC officials said the ceremonies were designed to be appropriate for such an historic event — with search lights, red carpet, heated tent at Center and Anderson streets, live music, souvenir photo opportunities and light hors d’oeuvres, all capped by a Champagne toast and special pre-curtain ceremonies inside. Those attending are encouraged to dress in formal attire if possible.
