A portion of Brownwood Middle School’s digital media center (library) underwent its annual transformation into the “Java Nook” poetry club in November.  Under the guidance of BMS English teachers, students were able to experience performing in a “poetry café” complete with tables, refreshments, and a stage set up in the corner.

Performances were held on November 14th and 15th during class, with each student taking a turn on the stage to recite their selection.  “This year, students recited original poetry as well as published material,” said BMS English teacher, Brenda Howard. “Each year, more and more students are writing their own pieces.”

On the final day, students brought a variety of snacks that were made available for patrons to enjoy while watching the performances.

BMS faculty that helped coordinate and facilitate the Java Nook Poetry Café this year included teachers, Brenda Howard, Jen Williams, Rikki Bell, and DaLin Cummings (Digital Media Specialist). This year marks the fourth year for the Java Nook Poetry Café project.

“There were some outstanding, emotional pieces this year by our students,” said Howard, noting that several students wrote multiple poems instead of just the required one. “This year’s event was full of humorous poems, poems read to music, touching tributes to lost loved ones, and Brownwood Lions sports poems.”
