The PAWS program at the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex pairs a select group of TJJD youth with K-9 partners from the local Corinne T. Smith Animal Center for 12 weeks. During this time, the dogs learn basic commands, improve their socialization skills and earn the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizenship certification. The youth benefit by learning to demonstrate empathy, compassion and responsibility. They are responsible for their dogs at all times and do all the feeding, walking, grooming and training. The youth and their companion form great bonds during this time, helping both of them. Currently Ron Jackson has three AKC graduates ready for adoption.
Oink is a one and a half year old ten pound male rat terrier Chihuahua. Oink has passed all tests and has earned the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizenship certification. A hyper, fun-loving dog, Oink loves to play outside in the yard and also enjoys rolling over and spinning in circles. Oink does fine when his trainer is away from the dorm, but gets very excited when she returns. Oink is a loyal companion to his owner and is a great watchdog. Oink would enjoy being adopted by a family with older kids that he could play with at the park.
Snoopy is another graduate of the PAWS program that is ready for adoption and has his Good Citizenship certification. He is a 12 pound rat terrier mix who is approximately 2 years old. Snoopy is also very energetic and loves playing outside with everyone. He also loves playing with bones and playing “dead.” He is a very social dog and gets lonely when his trainer leaves the dorm. Snoopy would be a good match for a younger person or family with a lot of energy.
