Brownwood High School cheerleaders, both varsity and JV squads, recently attended a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) camp on the campus of Tarleton State University winning many top honors.
While at camp, the varsity squad received a Spirit Stick every day of camp. The Spirit Stick is presented to squads that show sincere spirit and enthusiasm for the day while taking into consideration, attitude during classes, promptness, cooperation, relationships with other teams and leadership. Squads were also evaluated on cheers and chants that were taught at camp and during evaluations that were exhibited at camp; the varsity squad received 2 excellent ribbons for cheers, 2 excellent ribbons for chants, 1 superior ribbon for cheer, and 1 superior ribbon for chant. Varsity was also presented the Herkie team award, which is voted on by campers every night of camp, on the third and final night.
For their evaluations, the JV squad received 1 outstanding ribbon for chant, 2 excellent ribbons for cheer, 1 excellent ribbon for chant, 1 superior ribbon for cheer and 1 superior ribbon for chant.
The NCA Spirit Award, an award given to squads that have been voted on by the campers, is presented to squads that teams at camp feel have added the most spirit to the camp all week and was presented to the entire cheer program at BHS, giving both squads a bid to national competition.
“BHS is proud of these girls and their accomplishments,” said sponsor Estella Soto.
There were also had several girls nominated for All-American. The girls were nominated for dance, cheer, chants, jumps or leadership. These All-American nominees included: Maddie Oines, Lexie Lewis, Ashley Gomez, Alexa Cervera, McKenzie Tucker, McKenzie Cox, Victoria Sanchez, Tristan Escamilla and Micaela Lombrano. The girls tried out for All-American on the last night of camp.
There were a large number of girls from the entire camp that tried out for All-American and only 5 girls were chosen from the entire camp. Tristan Escamilla (pictured left) was chosen not only as All-American, but was also Top All-American which means she scored the highest point total overall at camp and was awarded with the NCA top All-American medal.
“For this achievement, Tristan has been given an invitation to participate in an NCA event such as the NCA/NDA Christmas Extravaganza and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” explained Soto. “We are very proud of Tristan!”
