Citizens of Brown County paid honor and respect to those fallen in service to our country on Memorial Day.

Locally, veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice were honored in an annual service held at Eastlawn Memorial Park.  Veterans buried at Greenleaf Cemetery were also honored with placement of American flags at their gravesites (pictured above and below).

Across the community, many American flags were also flown in honor of Veterans, some at half mast.  Brownwood Rotary club members placed flags at the “Traffic T,” the intersection of Main and Commerce.

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally the day was Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.  For many, this holiday also marks the unofficial beginning of summer.

Pictured above and below are veterans’ graves decorated with flags at Greenleaf Cemetery.
