One man was arrested late Wednesday night after he and two friends had been drinking then attempted to flee from police after a traffic violation. According to the police report, a Brownwood police officer observed a white Chevy extended cab pickup speeding at a rate of 52 mph in a 35 mph zone on E. Commerce. When the officer pulled out onto the highway to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle quickly turned into the Budget Inn where it struck a parked Chevy Suburban and proceeded to the back of the complex, according to law enforcement.
When the officer got to the back of the motel, he noticed a male subject running up the stairs on the southeast corner of the main building, the report states. The officer ordered the male off of the stairs and onto the ground and he complied. When questioned if he was the driver of the vehicle, the male told the officer he was not, that he had been out drinking with two friends and that the driver ran because they had been drinking, the report states.
Other officers arrived to help in the search for the two other men in the incident. One checked the hotel room where the driver was staying but did not locate him. Another went across E. Commerce to the Ben Lednicky Park and found 20-year-old Gregory Hopkins who jumped into the Pecan Bayou in an attempt to swim to the other side to escape capture, according to the report. Hopkins was unable to swim to the other side and returned back to shore where he was taken into custody by officers, the report states.
Because the suspect on the stairs did not run from police, he was released at the scene to his supervisor. Hopkins however, was charged with evading on foot. Hopkins eventually confirmed the earlier story of the first suspect that the three had been drinking at Duke’s bar, the report states. The driver of the vehicle was not located and it was initially thought that he may have jumped into the bayou with Hopkins; however, Hopkins stated that they had crossed E. Commerce together but had split up and he did not see where the driver had went.
The vehicle was impounded and charges for evading arrest are pending against the driver, the report states. Brownwood Assistant Chief James Fuller stated that additional charges may be sought against the driver for fleeing the scene of an accident.
