The Howard Payne women’s basketball team hit the century mark for the first time this season in a 106-53 conference over Sul Ross State University Tuesday evening in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne opened the game with a 19-0 lead and never looked back holding a 47-22 halftime advantage. For the game, the Lady Jackets forced 36 Sul Ross State turnovers and outscored Sul Ross 45-14 in bench scoring.
Every active Lady Jacket scored with Tresta Donahoo leading the way with a game high 26 points. Donahoo also had four assists and four steals.
Dana Marrs followed with 21 points and nine rebounds. Shardena Hudson led the HPU bench with nine points. Kayla Scott dished out a game high seven assists.
Asrelle Anderson led Sul Ross with 18 points. Nicole Murdock added 12 points.
The Lady Jacket victory was also the 100th career coaching win for HPU head coach Joshua Prock.
Howard Payne is now 14-2 overall and 9-1 in conference while Sul Ross State falls to 1-15 overall and 0-10 in ASC play. The Lady Jackets will play next on January 19th at 3:00 pm in Abilene versus Hardin-Simmons University.
The Howard Payne men’s basketball team could not match 64% second half shooting by Sul Ross State University and fell 86-76 in conference action Tuesday evening.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half but the Yellow Jackets were able to gain a 32-28 halftime advantage.
Starting the second half with a 10-2 run, Sul Ross would shoot 64% from the field the rest of the game. SRSU led by as many as 17 with six minutes to play.
HPU was able to cut the Sul Ross lead to nine, 71-62 with 3:13 left on a Brandon Gould three pointer. Sul Ross would hold on for the 86-76 win.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Brandon Gould with 24 points and four assists. Christian Davis finished with 14 points. Donovan Ford scored 12 off the bench and JaKalan Gayden added 10 points and six rebounds.
Sul Ross was led by Ryan Hagan with 24 points. Trey Richardson added 19 and Carlos Montiel had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
HPU is now 5-11 overall and 3-7 in ASC play. Sul Ross stands at 4-12 overall and 3-7 in conference. The Jackets will play next on January 21st in Abilene versus Hardin-Simmons at 7:00 pm.
