Allen “Wayne” Worley, 82, of Brownwood passed away on May 22, 2012, in Brownwood, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Brownwood. The family will receive visitors at Heartland Funeral Home Wednesday, May 23, 2012.
Wayne, the youngest of ten children, was born on December 2, 1929, to Benjamin Franklin Worley and Bertha Elizabeth Allen Worley in Haskell County, Texas. He graduated from Rule High School in 1947 and worked as a Soda Jerk at the local Rule drugstore. After graduation he served in the US Air Force. As a young man, Wayne accepted Christ as his personal Savior and strived to live a faithful life of service to the Lord. He married Vera Sue Couch on June 8, 1952. They moved to Brownwood in 1963 and have made Brown County their home ever since. Together, they raised three children, Gary Worley, Carla Worley Lehrmann, and Sara Worley Killian. Throughout their 59 year marriage, the family grew to include a daughter in-law, Donna Worley, and two sons-in-law, Rick Lehrmann and Ken Killian; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A devoted family man, Wayne’s first priority was always his wife and family. His quiet strength resounded in wisdom and served as an example to his children and grandchildren. He showed his love of family in a variety of ways and enjoyed spending time with them. From travels as a family to grilling on the back porch and playing games around the dining room table, Wayne was always at the center of the fun. In 2010, Wayne and his son, Gary, traveled to Arlington, Texas, for Game 3 of the World Series. He was thrilled to witness his favorite team, the Texas Rangers, beat the San Francisco Giants. He was always quick to remind everyone that he was there for the only game the Rangers won in that series! To his family, Wayne was a steadfast support and always provided wise advice when asked. His loved ones never questioned his devotion or love for them, and will always remember his prayers concluded by asking the Lord’s blessings over his family for “generations and generations to come.”
Professionally, Worley served his state and community for 35 years as a District Director for the US Department of Agriculture ASCS. He was remembered as a well-respected leader who managed with integrity and compassion. His dedication to his community continued as he served as Brown County Commissioner of Precinct 2 from 1992-1998. His terms as commissioner were marked by honest leadership and fair decisions. Worley considered it a privilege to serve Brown County and took the responsibility seriously while serving with great pride.
Wayne joined First Baptist Church of Brownwood in 1963. He was ordained as a deacon in 2002. He and Sue were active members of the Butler Sunday School class for many years. The relationships formed through First Baptist Church have provided not only spiritual growth and encouragement, but also meaningful and lasting friendships.
His involvement in his community was not only evident in his career, but also through his civic affiliations. Wayne volunteered for Meals on Wheels, served on the board of Good Samaritan Ministries, and was a member of the Jaycees. He was a Mason and a member of the Suez Shrine. He served on the board of the Brown County Fair Association and was involved in the youth fair and rodeo for many years.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters. Wayne is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Gary Worley and wife Donna of Brownwood, Carla Lehrmann and husband Rick of Katy, Sara Killian and husband Ken of Garland; his grandchildren, Jennifer Worley Salyards and husband Daryl of Fort Worth, Janet Worley Ogden and husband Alan of Blanket, Brian Lehrmann and wife Kirsten of Fort Worth, Meagan Lehrmann Ong and husband Justin of Houston, Parker, Blake and Cole Killian of Garland; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Geraldine Triplett of Longview, Christine Hatfield of Sayre, Oklahoma, and Fay McBroom of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews.
