The Howard Payne University baseball team completed their American Southwest Conference series with McMurry University, falling in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, 7-4 and 11-1, at Walt Driggers Field.
With the losses, Howard Payne stands at 11-17 overall and 5-10 in conference play. McMurry improves to 16-14 overall.
In the first game, Howard Payne scored single runs in each of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead that forced McMurry to change pitchers. In the bottom of the fifth, McMurry would score five runs to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, McMurry added two runs scored via two wild pitches that made it the 7-4 final.
Gilbert Barrera got the loss in game one. Berrera threw 4.1 innings of work giving up five runs on seven hits. Houston Holmes and Colton Buzzard each had two hits. Five Howard Payne errors in game two lead to an 11-1 loss for the Jackets.
Howard Payne would gain their run in the top of the sixth when Colton Buzzard singled to left center to score Ryan Abbott. Jonathan Morris got the loss for HPU throwing 4.2 innings giving up six runs on eight hits. Jordan Hammontree and Jake Sadler each had two hits.
The Yellow Jackets will play next on Tuesday in Dallas versus Dallas Christian College at 1:00 pm.
SHERMAN, Texas – Howard Payne University pitcher Kayla Castillo recorded a complete game win 7-0 over Austin College in game one of the Lady Jackets non-conference double header. Howard Payne dropped game two 10-7 to the Lady Roos.
Kayla Castillo gave up just seven hits and struckout three to post a 7-0 complete game win over Austin College in game one of the scheduled double header. Shandi Winstead went 3 of 4 from the plate with one RBI. Katie Poerner, Haleigh Caraway and Jessica Morales each recorded two hits in the game.
In game two, the Lady Jackets could not recover from a 6-run bottom of the first by Austin College. In the openning frame, the Lady Jackets committed two errors and Kayla Castillo would come in to relieve starter Baillie Trumble midway through the inning. Trumble was tabbed with the loss giving up five runs one four hits. Haleigh Caraway also saw four innings of action in relief. The Lady Jackets used a 5-run third to battle back to within two 8-6. After HPU added another run in the top of the fifth, Austin College scored two in the bottom of the inning to put the game away 10-7.
Howard Payne now stands at 11-15 overall and Austin College in 6-20 overall. The Lady Jackets will play next on April 4th and 5th in a conference series with Texas Lutheran University in Brownwood.
