Relay for Life Brown County recently kicked off their 2011 campaign, “Tooning out Cancer and are looking forward to exceeding last year’s record setting Relay. Relay for Life benefits the American Cancer Society and promotes cancer awareness, research and prevention.
There are 36 teams currently registered and the goal is to have 75 for this year’s Relay. The 2010 Relay had a nearly 70 teams with a fundraising goal of $110,000 which produced a record total of $130,000. This year’s Relay goal is $125,000.
The 12 hour Relay for Life Event will take place at Gordon Wood Stadium from 6pm June 3rd through 6am on June 4th. This year’s campaign theme is “Tooning out Cancer” and teams are encouraged to pick out a cartoon mascot and decorate their tent.
TEAMS: Teams are generally 8-10 people and have goals of raising $100 per person or $1000 per team. Of course this amount is not required. If you do not have a team and wish to be on a team, please call Lainey Hall at 325-642-0463. To register a team is $25 and team members raising $100 or more will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt. Teams can set up tents for their overnight stay and are encouraged to decorate them and have some fun raising money for a great cause.
SURVIVORS:
Survivors are the reason we Relay. A survivor is anyone who has ever heard the words “You have cancer.” All cancer survivors in the community are invited to attend Relay For Life. Our goal is to create a world where more people survive cancer – so they can celebrate another birthday. This year more than 11 million people will be able to do that thanks to the support of millions of dedicated Relay participants. Survivors are the guests of honor at Relay. Some Relay For Life events may offer survivors special T-shirts or sashes or hold a special reception for survivors and caregivers. However, most Relays open with the Survivors Lap where survivors lead the way around the track while being honored and applauded by all participants. Being a part of the Survivors Lap allows survivors to celebrate what they’ve overcome while inspiring and motivating their community to fight. Survivors are proof that cancer can be defeated. Caregivers are also in important part of the fight against cancer and are encouraged to participate and register for the Relay.
To register as a survivor or caregiver, please contact Becky Smith at 325-647-9082.
SPONSORS: Sponsors for the Relay and its different event are also being sought at this time. Please contact Margaret Carter at 325-642-1309.
Co-Chairmen of the 2011 Relay for Life Brown County are Jolyn Knight and Casey Rowlett.
