Checks Plus #1423 of Brownwood was recently challenged by their parent company to see which of their 24 stores could raise the most money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by selling “Shamrocks” for MDA. Each shamrock could be purchased with donations of $1 for green shamrocks or $5 for gold shamrocks.
Cyndi Guthrie, manager of Checks Plus said that although she and her staff were the smallest store of Lawrence Management in Sweetwater, they raised the most of all the stores with $2251. Shamrocks now cover the entire lobby’s walls creating quite a site of Shamrocks with names of individuals, companies and even some honoring the memory of loved ones and some that honored the National Guard.
Taking this challenge to heart, each of the three local employees sold about $700, with Guthrie selling the most of the entire company at $851 personally. Guthrie stated, “We want to thank our customers for their donations,” stating that some would buy a shamrock each time they came into the stores and one company bought about $100 worth of the shamrocks.
The money raised in this event was to help send children who suffer from Muscular Dystrophy to summer camp at a cost of $800 per child. The ladies at Checks Plus have made it possible for about three more kids to have a chance to attend camp.
