“The Texas Snake Man” Jackie Bibby saw his world record broken twice this weekend at the 46th Lone Star Fair & Expo & Rattlesnake Roundup only to reclaim his title by the end of the event.
The “Snakes in the Sleeping Bag Contest’s” world record was held by Bibby prior to the weekend festivities at 112 Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes. The record was broken twice on Saturday with 122 and then 145.
Brownwood resident Willie Holster tried the contest for the first time in his life topping out at 105 snakes. Although not a world record, Willie was still proud of it.
On Sunday, Bibby took back his record with 150 snakes in his sleeping bag. Although this is probably most people’s worst nightmare, the crowd cheered on the snake man in his victory. The rules for the contest are simple – contestants have 10 minutes to have someone put as many rattlesnakes in their sleeping bags as possible. Once done, they have to stay in the zipped-up bag for 10 seconds.
Jackie Bibby is always a fun attraction at the annual event that draws several thousand visitors to the
Brownwood Coliseum. The Brownwood Jaycees host the event each year with not only the snake attractions, but some great vendors and other attractions as well.
Rising Star native Jackie Bibby has been bitten nine times by rattlesnakes leaving his arms and hands scarred. Last summer Bibby appeared on the CMT Television network’s “ALL JACKED UP” program. The show featured Bibby as he “wrangled” Texas diamond-back rattlesnakes and crawled into a see-through bathtub with several Texas rattlers. As an added attraction for the TV audience, Bibby held twelve rattlesnakes suspended in his mouth, and kissed a deadly cobra on the head.
