Early High School Tennis Earns 3 Bronze Medals at Brownwood Tournament

Early High School Tennis recently competed at the Brownwood Tournament on March 7th and came home with three bronze medals.

Kwade Boyd in boys singles along with Austin Carlisle and Sahib Kang in boys doubles, each earned 3rd place in the tournament.  All three are freshmen at Early High School.

Horton Shows Skill in Texas Round-Up All Star Game

AubreyHorton2013Aubrey Horton, a senior at Early High School, competed in the Maypearl Texas Round-up All-Star Game on March 16th and had a successful game.

Horton had 10 pts, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 3 assists according to Early High School Head Girls Basketball Coach Kristi Sandoval.

“She played very well,” said Sandoval. “We are very proud of Aubrey.”

Lady Lions Compete at Burnet Invitational Golf Tournament

leapinglionBrownwood High School’s Lady Lion Golf Team participated in the Burnet Invitational golf tournament Monday, March 18th.

The tournament was held at the Delaware Springs Golf Course.  According to Head Girls Golf Coach Laura Martin, it was a beautiful day for golf.

The Lady Lions competed in this very large tournament with many 3A, 4A and 5A teams.

Gatesville won first place as a team and earned the top three medalist places.  The Lady Lions finished 13th shooting a 419.  BHS Freshman Sydney Roberts was tied for ninth shooting an 83 out of 111 girls.

Howard Payne University to Host 10 and Under Tennis League

Howard_Payne_logosmallTennis players 10 years-old and under are invited to participate in a 10 and under league with instruction by the Howard Payne University tennis team under the direction of HPU Head Tennis Coach Sally Brown.

Spots are limited and instruction will be offered at Howard Payne University beginning at 5:30 PM on March 25th.

The cost to participate is $50, which includes a t-shirt, racket and the league/instruction runs for 5 weeks.

Brownwood Competes in Regional Powerlifting Meet

IMG_0271Brownwood Lions Kevin Hobbs and Jaylen Bocknite competed at the Regional Powerlifting Meet in West on Saturday.

Kevin participated in the Super Heavy Weight division, finishing the day with a personal best of a total of 1380lbs.  He also had a personal best in squat with 600lbs.

Jaylen participated in the 220lb Division, and he also had a personal best with a 500lb squat.

"Both Kevin and Jaylen had a great year, breaking many personal records throughout the year" said Head Powerlifting Coach Jim Taylor.

Brownwood Bluebonnet Relay Results and Photo Gallery

The Brownwood Lady Lions took 2nd place and the Lions 4th place Saturday in the 3A-5A Division at the Bluebonnet Relays held at Gordon Wood Stadium, and athletes secured several medals on each team.

The Lady Lions varsity team took 4 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 bronze at the meet.  Leading the Lady Lions with first place finishes were Lexie Lewis in the 100m dash, Katy Jacobs in the 1600m run, the Lady Lions relay team in the 4 x 400m relay and Victoria Henry in the shot put.

Lady Lions silver medalists included Julianne Hood in the 1600m run, Lexie Lewis in the 200m dash and Sharday Melvin in the 300m intermediate hurdles.

Caroline Kirbo won the bronze medal in the pole vault.

Bluebonnet Relays Set for Friday & Saturday

maintrack2012The 2013 Bluebonnet Relays are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, starting at noon each day at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Track and field events will bring athletes from 1A-5A schools to compete against each other in various events.  Even elementary school children will have a chance to taste the thrill racing on the track.  Second graders will take on the 400M run; third graders will compete in the 800M run, and sixth graders will get a taste of the mile run.

This year’s relay will feature three divisions pitting Brownwood High against 4A and 5A schools in Division I.  Division II will be 1A and 2A schools.  Division III will be made up of Junior Varsity from all size classifications.  Races will start with Division III, followed by Division II and then Division I.

HPU Golf Tournament Registration Now Open

HPUHallOfFameGolfTournamentRegistration is now open for the First Annual Howard Payne University Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament. The Tournament will be held at the Hideout on Lake Brownwood Saturday, May 4th.

The Howard Payne University athletic department will be having a four-man scramble golf tournament at the Hideout Golf Club on Lake Brownwood Saturday, May 4th in conjunction with the HPU Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, May 3rd.

BHS Athletes Medal in 16 Events at Fredericksburg Meet

Brownwood High School varsity and junior varsity track teams traveled to Fredericksburg to compete in the Carlin Wicker Relays on Saturday, March 2nd, bringing home three gold medals.

The Lady Lions varsity placed 4th as a team and the Lions earned 5th place.  Other teams competing included Boerne, Burnet, Fredericksburg, Kerrville Tivy, Marble Falls, Lampasas, and TMI of San Antonio.

Bangs Lady Dragons Regional Power Lifting Results

The Lady Dragons of Bangs High School represented their school well at the Regional Girls Powerlifting meet on Saturday, March 2 in Gatesville with one qualifying for State competition and others placing well in their classes.  The team is led by Coach Meredyth Meador.

Amber Jones placed 2nd overall, competing in the 148 lb class and lifting a total of 730 lbs.  She will compete March 15 & 16 in Corpus Christi in the State Powerlifting meet.

Area Athletes Named as Girls Basketball All-District Selections

Several area high school athletes were named as in Girls Basketball All-District selections and two of them were named MVPs.

Brownwood’s Keeta Vaccaro (Jr.) was named District 8-3A MVP and Aubrey Horton (Sr.), of Early High School, shares the top honor of District 6-2A being named Co- MVP with Taylor Neal (Sr.) of Brady.   Horton has also been chosen to play in the Texas Round Up All-Star Game in Maypearl in March.
