Milton Avenue Baptist Church Youth Bake Sale 3/31

Youth from Milton Avenue Baptist Church will be holding a bake sale fundraiser on Saturday, March 31st in front of Hibbett's Sporting Goods at Commerce Square in Brownwood from 9:00am until 2:00pm.

According to organizers, funds raised will help fund the cost of a youth trip and concert on April 6-7.

HPU to Host Resurrection Week Events

Howard_Payne_logosmallHoward Payne University will host Resurrection Week, the university’s annual spring revival, April 2-4. The featured speaker for the week is Mike Satterfield of Field of Grace Ministries from Alabaster, Alabama. Music will be provided by Roger Cullins, a worship leader and songwriter from Houston. Cullins is a 2003 graduate of HPU.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday at the university’s Mims Auditorium. All services are open to the public.

On Monday at 2:30 p.m., there will be a meet-and-greet time for students to get to know the Resurrection Week team at the “Hub,” HPU’s Baptist Student Ministry office.

After-service fellowships will be held in front of Mims Auditorium on Monday and Tuesday evenings beginning at 8:45 p.m.  Additionally, there will be a prayer meeting for the Resurrection Week services on Sunday, April 1, at 9:00 p.m., in the Bullion Suites of the Mabee University Center.

Striving for as much prayer as possible for the week, students will lead a Prayer Walk around campus Monday-Wednesday at 7 a.m. beginning at Mims Auditorium.

Howard Payne sends delegates to World Model UN conference in Vancouver

The Howard Payne University Model United Nations team participated in the WorldMUN conference, March 11-15, hosted by Harvard University’s World Model United Nations team in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“The opportunity to participate in the Harvard World MUN conference allowed our students to simulate service as international diplomats with more than 2,000 students from some of the world’s leading universities,” said Samuel Greene, assistant professor of political science at HPU. “Our students more than held their own and had some great intercultural experiences along the way.”

EHS Holds Shattered Dreams Program

Early High School and the Early Police Department held a Shattered Dreams program Thursday afternoon to raise student awareness of the dangers of drinking or texting while driving.

A mock accident scene was viewed by students, parents and faculty in the parking lot of the football stadium which consisted of a two-car head-on collision caused by a drunk driver and a 3rd car whose driver is texting and hits the accident that has already occurred.  The result of the staged accident was where one fatality at the scene occurred and one patient was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Empty Bowls Gets Underway as Community Support Pours In

Community effort and community support is helping make the 2012 Good Samaritan Ministries Empty Bowls Project a success and is helping to make a difference to the hungry in Brownwood and across the world. The event runs until 7pm Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum and all funds raised go directly to the hungry, 90% is kept locally and the other 10% is tithed to a world hunger organization.

At lunch, hundreds of people came to participate in the program, admire and pick out hand painted bowls and enjoy soup donated by local restaurants. The bowls were then taken home to be a symbol of the many people facing empty bowls and the reality of hunger. Live music was enjoyed as participants dined.

HPU Teams Take Top Awards at Moot Court Tournament

Members of Howard Payne University’s Moot Court team received the highest rankings at a recent tournament at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Jake Aschmutat, a senior from Corpus Christi, and Charity Chambers, a junior from Derby, Kan., were named the Tournament Champions after defeating teams from Texas A&M University and the University of North Texas in the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament.

Reminder: Empty Bowls Project Today at the Coliseum

FiredBowlsThe Empty Bowls Project will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, March 29, 2012, at the Brownwood Coliseum.  Make plans now to attend on your lunch break or with your family after work.

For a donation only, choose a hand-painted bowl and enjoy a simple meal of soup or beans from local restaurants including Chick-Fil-A, Chili’s, Steves’ Market and Deli and the Runaway Train Café. Take your bowl home at the end of the day to serve as a reminder that there are those in the community who have empty bowls and empty stomachs. Debit and credit cards will be accepted this year. Proceeds from Empty Bowls will count towards the annual Feinstein Challenge so attending is another way of helping Good Samaritan Ministries meet their goal!

Ninety percent of the proceeds from the event will benefit local families through Good Samaritan Ministries, while the remaining 10 percent will go toward fighting hunger worldwide.

Girl Scouts of Central Texas Honor 2012 Women of Distinction

Six women and one business were honored by the Girl Scouts for being good role models and a being a workplace that supports women in the area.  A luncheon was held to honor the recipients and to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scout history at Howard Payne’s Mabee Center on Wednesday.  Pictured top are 2012 recipients:  (left to right) Kimberly Wilson, Jan Cate, Vella Rae Pallette, Lynn Humeniuk, Jeannette Chesser, and Christine Oliver representing The Chatfield.

HPU Social Work Club to Host Cinderella Project Prom Dress Giveaway

The HPU Social Work Club will be hosting the Cinderella Project (Prom Dress Giveaway) on Friday, March 30th from 4-6PM and Saturday, March 31st from 10AM-2PM in Howard Payne’s Girling Center for Social Justice located on Austin Avenue (next to the Academy of Freedom).

Through this annual project, HPU’s social work club helps girls who cannot afford to purchase prom dresses find the dress to make them feel like Cinderella.  This year over 100 dresses in various styles and sizes are available to choose from.  The program is offered to any girl from Brown or the surrounding counties who cannot afford a prom dress.

BHS Actors Bring Home Several Awards from District UIL One-Act Contest

The Brownwood High School theatre department performed “Jane Eyre” at the District UIL One-Act play competition in Sweetwater on Saturday, March 24th. The performance earned the cast more awards than any of the other shows, and even earned a 1st place rating by the lead judge in the panel.
