HPU With 24 On Winter/Spring All-Academic Teams

HPU logo Brownwood TXHoward Payne University had 24 student-Athletes named to the American Southwest Conference on its 2012-13 Winter/Spring All-Academic honor roll. The teams were announced by the ASC office on Thursday.

To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be classified academically as a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student during the competition season and have been in attendance and completed at least one academic year (two consecutive semesters) at their institution. They must also have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as certified at the conclusion of the academic semester in which the ASC sport championship is held.

Eight Lions Receive All-District Honors Including District MVP

Eight Brownwood Lions received All-District honors including Lions pitcher Scott Kinzler being named District 8-3A MVP.

The Lions wrapped up the season with a record of 20-13 and played in the area round of the playoffs.

1st team selections from Brownwood include:

2nd BASE - Bryant McDaniel, Sr.

Tickets Now Available for FCA All-Star Games

AllStarFestivalLogoTickets are now available for the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual all-star events, including the men’s and women’s all-star basketball games which will be held at the Brownwood Coliseum next month.

Tickets that include both of the basketball games are currently available for $10 each at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce. These all-star boys and girls basketball games are scheduled to be held at the Brownwood Coliseum on Thursday, June 6th.  The girls will play at 6:00 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 8:00 p.m.

Coaching the girls’ basketball South team will be Early High School Head Coach, Kristi Sandoval.

The FCA all-star volleyball game will take place at noon on Saturday, June 8th, 2013 at Abilene Christian University's Moody Coliseum.  The 14th Annual Myrle Greathouse All-Star Classic Football Game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 8th at Shotwell Stadium.

HPU Alumni Win Inaugural Sports Hall of Game Golf Tournament

A team of Howard Payne University alumni won the Inaugural Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament held on May 4th at the Hideout Golf Club on Lake Brownwood.

The four-man scramble team of Will Carrier '89, C. Norman Tinkler '75, Andy Gill '91 and David McCullough '76 won the Inaugural Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament. They shot a tournament best 53 pacing the rest of the field by five strokes.

HPU students Joey Carmack, Kyle Hamlin and Klay Cunningham paired with Joey Kirk to take second place with a 58.

Cherita George Commits to Howard Payne University

Brownwood High School’s Cherita George has committed to play softball for Howard Payne University and was celebrated by her coaches, teammates, family and friends on Monday afternoon in a mock signing ceremony.

According to her coaches, George has exemplified leadership, dedication and skill throughout her time as a Brownwood Lady Lion.

Area Schools Compete at State Track Meet

leapinglionSeveral local high school athletes made a good showing over the weekend at the UIL state track and field meet held in Austin.

Brownwood took home two 3A medals thanks to a 2nd place state finish for Victoria Henry in the shot put and 3rd place for Lexie Lewis in the 200 meter.

Blanket’s Rowdy Johnson secured the state 1A division II 1st place finish in the boys 200 meter, and the Blanket 4x100 relay team brought home silver.

Zephyr’s Haven Rogers was 3rd in the Girls 1600.

Santa Anna’s Hannah Hartman brought home two medals; silver in the pole vault and bronze in the 100 meter hurdles.

Brownwood Soccer Club's Extreme 3v3 Summer League Registration Underway

BwdSoccerClubLogoRegistration is now open to join Brownwood Soccer Club’s Extreme 3v3 Summer League.

The league will start and run through July according to organizers.  Cost to join is $55.  Registration forms are available at Weakley-Watson and checks should be made payable to BSC Extreme.  Registration deadline is May 17th.

Games will be held during the week and on weekends to work around everyone’s schedule, according to Michael Lancaster club organizer.

BHS to Offer Free Physicals to Area Athletes Saturday

leapinglionArea students are invited to Brownwood High School on Saturday, May 11th where free student physicals will be offered in the Warren Gym.

Girls should arrive between 8-9 am and boys from 9-10 am.  A parent or guardian's signature is required on the physical form.

Cen-Tex Bluejets Earn 1st Place at Abilene Soccer Tournament

The Cen-Tex Bluejets U-11 soccer team played in the Abilene Spring Fling soccer tournament the weekend of May 4-5.  The Bluejets took home the first place trophy after winning in the finals.
