Students Compete at Little Lion Olympics – Photo Gallery

Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate School hosted their 2nd annual Little Lions Olympics on Friday, May 17th at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The event gave approximately 500 students an opportunity to participate in a junior track meet and help prepare them for their athletic career. The event had an Olympic theme, with an opening ceremony of teams marching in with their class/team flags, an Olympic torch and even a dove release.

BIS Principal Chuck Chesser brought in the torch and stood ceremoniously by as Dennis Graham released racing pigeons into the air to create a grand ceremony for the kids and their parents to enjoy.

Pregnancy Care Center to Offer Workshop for Parents Monday

The Pregnancy Care Center will be holding a free workshop for parents called TCSI (Teaching Children Sexual Integrity) on Monday, May 20th at Early High School. The workshop will be held from 5:30 PM-6:45 PM.

Attendance to this workshop is encouraged for all parents whose children will be attending the Sex Matters Workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday at Early Middle / High School.

Relay for Life Bunco Night to be Hosted by CMS Health Care Monday, May 20th

ACSRelay4LifeCMS Health Care will host a night of Bunco on Monday, May 20th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Abundant Life Church, located at 585 W. Commerce in Brownwood.  All proceeds benefit Relay for Life of Brown County.

It's Bunco time come ready to roll for a good cause.  Organizers state that it will be an evening of fun.

Tickets are $10 to join the event.

There will also be raffle tickets for a chance to win many necklaces, which will be going on until the Relay for Life event. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.

This year’s Relay for Life of Brown County is themed “7-7-7 Don't Gamble with Cancer.” The relay is set for June 7 from 7pm-7am at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.

Six Students Pass State CNA Course through New Program Offered at BHS

During the 2012-2013 school year Brownwood High School implemented a new program with the help of health science teacher Annalyn Deen.  A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class was added to the health science track to allow senior students to become certified nursing assistants by the end of the school year.  This is a State of Texas mandated-course that has very specific requirements for each student to pass.

“We had a total of six girls start the program this year,” said Deen. “At the end of the year all six students passed the grueling state test.”  Catherine Daniel, Miranda Chandler, Shayla Biessener, Dara Wise, Linda Luna, and Christina Gutierrez were required to perform 5 of 37 skills on residents in the nursing home and then take a 70 question written test, a process that took from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on April 29th.

Entries Still Being Accepted for the 50th Annual Brown County Rodeo Parade

The 50th annual Brown County Rodeo is fast approaching and organizers are getting set for a great lineup of events and activities including the rodeo parade.

As a major component to the rodeo each year, the Brown County Rodeo Parade will travel through Downtown Brownwood and feature a wide assortment of entries. Entry forms are now being accepted for the parade which will take place Saturday, June 8th at 10 AM.

Family Outdoor Expo to be held Saturday at Riverside Park

CogginOutdoorFamilyExpoCoggin Avenue Baptist Church will host their second annual Family Outdoor Expo at Riverside Park from 10:00am-4:00pm on Saturday, May 18th at Riverside Park in Brownwood.  The public is invited to attend this free event. It is designed to bring families together for a fun-filled day enjoying many outdoor booths and activities.

Along with the outdoor events, there will be a canned food drive for Good Samaritan Ministries and participants are invited to help “stock the truck.” There will also be concessions for sale which will benefit the CABC Youth Group.

Events to be enjoyed include:

  • Remote Control Truck Races
  • Kayak Paddling
  • Archery
  • Nerf Crossbow Range
  • Live Catfish Pond
  • Rock Climbing Wall
  • Putt-Putt Golf
  • Disc Golf Course : First 500 players will receive free Frisbees

Trowbridge Honored as Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star 2013 Individual Partner of the Year

This year Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, recognizing that some individuals in our communities go above and beyond to support the mission of BBBS, added a new annual award for Individual Partner of the Year. BBBS Lone Star serves 106 counties in Texas including Brown County. Nominations from all over the state were accepted for this new award. Jared Trowbridge, Vice President of the Brown County Board of Directors was honored Tuesday, May 14th at the Annual All Region Board Meeting in Irving, Texas as the 2013 Individual Partner of the Year. Trowbridge was presented the award to a standing ovation crowd.

Impressed that such a young man was making such a significant contribution for the children in our community, newly appointed, BBBS Lone Star CEO, Rob Roby said, “I need to watch out for you. You’ll be after my job someday.”

Buckmasters American Deer Foundation to Host Fundraiser Banquet Saturday

BHS Project Graduation to Host Powderpuff Football & Volleyball Games

leapinglionBrownwood Project Graduation will host their annual Powder Puff Football Game and Powderpuff Volleyball Game on Sunday, May 19th at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The game will take place at 4:00 p.m. with senior girls taking on the junior girls.

Immediately after the football game, the senior boys will compete against the junior boys in the Powder Puff Volleyball game.

Admission fees of $3 for adults and $2 for students will be charged.  Brisket sandwich meals will also be sold for $6 a plate.

Claude Awarded Victory in Europe Medal

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3278 and the Ladies’ & Men’s Auxiliaries observed the end of the War in Europe, VE Day, on May 8th at the VFW Post at 2300 Stephen F. Austin.

The Post awarded the Victory in Europe Commemorative Medal to Machinist Mate 3rd Class Michael M. Claude Jr.  Mr. Claude served in United States Coast Guard July 1942 to March 1946.   He is credited with the American Campaign Medal for his service in the Battle of the Atlantic.
